This puzzle is based on Bongard problems, where the goal is to figure out what the six patterns on the left have in common that the six patterns on the right do not. (If you like this kind of thing, this page indexes lots more. My favorite is number 144.)

In this puzzle you get eight of the twelve patterns and you have to fill in the missing four. Once you do that, the light blue shapes will form letters (you may need to squint) spelling out SUBURBAN.

  • the playtest version. After the playtest we made it larger (11x17; the playtest version was 8.5x11 so the pieces were tiny), added a title in the answer color and "font" to suggest what you were looking for, made the drop shadows more prominent and added the dotted lines (playtesters had some problems orienting the pieces), and changed the bottom-right problem entirely. We also changed the answer word (it was previously INSIGNIA, a connection to the Presidential seal printed in the corner).
