Code Yellow was formed in June 2007 to compete in the 1st Google Puzzle Hunt. (We're still patiently waiting for team Phobos-Grunt to put on the 2nd Google Puzzle Hunt.) For most of us, that was our introduction to puzzles.

A slight majority of Code Yellow are Googlers, and a slight majority of Code Yellow are MIT alumni (orthogonal).

Code Yellow is also known as Snow Job when we field two teams for an event.
Blood & Bones

216.239.45.4:

Blood & Bones, or B&B for short, is a group of puzzling friends from Stanford that has been together since 2001. B&B has won 5 BANGs and hosted 3 BANGs, putting them near the top in both categories in the BANG Hall of Fame. They have also participated in every BANG that has occurred as either a host, participant, or playtester. You can see a complete listing of their team history at their official team page.

Team Members
Team members typically include some combination of:

* Rich Bragg
* Scott Krueger
* Robert Cheng
* Sarah Barnum
* Matt Green
* Chris Cheng
* Sarangan Narasimhan
* Kiki Bragg

The following are still card-carrying members of Blood & Bones, but don't play as much any more due to being geographically challenged:

* Rico Fisher (moved to Indiana)
* Mike Holzbaur (moved to North Carolina)
* Kate Holzbaur (moved to North Carolina)
* Ajit Chaudhari (moved to Ohio)

Alternate Names
B&B has played under a handful of different names in the past. Typically, when B&B plays as two separate teams, it plays as Blood and Bones. However, for BANG 1, B&B played as Mudbloods and Blood Lite, while for BANG 5, B&B played as Blood and Mothra's Minions.

In other cases, B&B has teamed up with non-B&B individuals and taken on different names. For BANG 10, B&B teamed up with Justin Graham of Bad Hair Day and played as Nobody Expects the Spanish Inquisition. For BANG 15, B&B teamed up with Bob Schaffer of Team Longshots and played as Blood & Bob.

Another example of a non-standard team name was for BANG 12, when B&B played as the Burninatees in homage to the newly recent dominance of the Burninators. Finally, B&B teamed up with Bad Hair Day in hosting BANG 6 as Bloodied by Science.

Since BANG 18, B&B has played in a self-enforced "drinking division" in which each member of the team drinks a shot of alcohol or equivalent after each clue. The team adopted the alternate name Blood & Booze starting with BANG 21 for use when playing in the drinking division.

BANG is the Bay Area Night Game, started in November of 2002 by David Alyea. It is a sort of puzzly team race, like a children's treasure hunt, but with tougher challenges. BANG is a community-based game in which the teams that play in BANG also take turns producing BANGs. Game Control (GC) for any particular game selects the theme, writes and playtests the puzzles, sets the route, decides how to rank teams, and handles any related administrivia.

The first ever BANG race was held in the Presidio in San Francisco, and 10 teams on that night solved 10 puzzles while traversing a 7 mile course in near pitch black conditions. Along the way, they climbed through equipment in children's playgrounds, deciphered perl code, visited the pet cemetary, and even stopped to bowl at the Presidio Bowling Alley.

Initially, the team that won a BANG was expected to produce the next one. There is still the expectation that winning teams will "give back" (and they do), but now any team who wants to run a BANG can do so - and any team that regularly plays in BANG should plan to produce one at some point.

Since the first BANG, demand has grown to the point where more than 60 teams will apply to play each time a game is announced. As a result, games are often run twice, each time for a field of 30 or so teams. Even then, some teams are waitlisted and do not get to play.

And, the puzzles have gotten harder. And most BANGs seem to be played in daytime in recent years.

Still, at the core, BANG is meant to be a night-time only game played outdoors in which teams traverse by foot the entire course, carrying game supplies, flashlights, and plenty of extra clothing to stay warm into the night.

The following are all the BANG races held so far. (You can read more about past BANGs)

* BANG 1: The Presidio
* BANG XXVI: Viking Conquest (Downtown Mountain View)
* BANG 29: Ghost Patrol: Bust A'Nother Ghost (Berkeley)

By now, some traditions have arisen around BANG. Each team is required to bring a prize valued between $5 and $15 to go into the prize pool, and you can also expect one puzzle per BANG to feature a physical challenge or some sort of game. Past BANGs have included pinball, darts, disc golf, and even exercise ball golf!
